Lunch Guest

"Lunch Guest"

Between bites of our peanut butter sandwiches, we looked at each other.  "Was that...?" and pretty soon, yes, we heard horse nickers as they moved from the brush toward the river AND WE WERE RIGHT IN THEIR PATH!  The wild horses of the Salt River!  I crammed the last bite of my sandwich in my mouth and grabbed my camera and got this shot as one of the horses came around the tree branches and spotted us in its path under the canopy of a couple small trees.  So my featured image this month isn't a tremendously artistic image, but it's my first photo of a mustang in the wild.

My husband Thomas and I visited the Salt River Recreation Area near Mesa, Arizona, where wild horses are known to roam.  It was Tuesday, May 28th, 2024, the day after Memorial Day.  I was worried all the holiday weekend activities might have driven the horses away from the recreation area, but these areas are the only way to access the river, so here we were.  We arrived around 10 a.m. and wandered upstream along the river on the trails.  We kept walking to try and get past all of the human visitors who had set up day use spots and were blaring loud music.  Around noon we were getting hungry and hadn't seen any horses, so we decided to sit in the shade and eat our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  And then they came.  I was so thrilled!  I'll share more of the Salt River Horse images in the future.

Salt River Horse images have been added to the Fine Art Gallery.
